How to Get Around Delhi: Metro, Cabs, Autos and More
Quick answer: Delhi is large enough that your transport strategy can make or break a sightseeing day. The simplest rule is to use the Metro for the big movements, a cab when you want the easiest door-to-door trip, and an auto-rickshaw when the distance is short.
Delhi Metro: usually the smartest option
The Metro is the most useful transport system for visitors who want predictable travel across the city. DMRC currently offers QR-based paper tickets, mobile QR tickets, WhatsApp QR tickets, smart cards and tourist cards. Check DMRC’s current ticket guidance before travelling.
For tourists, the best habit is simple: identify your destination station first, then use a short walk, auto or cab for the last stretch.
App-based cabs
Use an app cab when you have luggage, are travelling late, are staying far from a station, or want a direct ride. Confirm the vehicle and driver details in the app before getting in. Delhi Airport’s official transport information also lists app-based cab and taxi options at T1, T2 and T3.
Auto-rickshaws
Autos are excellent for short trips and the “last mile” from Metro stations. Agree on the fare or use a metered/app-based option where available. Have the destination ready on your phone so the driver can see the exact place.
Walking
Delhi is not a city where every attraction should be reached by walking from the previous attraction. Instead, think in walkable pockets: Old Delhi lanes, Lodhi Garden, Mehrauli, Connaught Place and selected market areas.
How to plan transport like a local
- Cluster nearby attractions into one block.
- Use Metro for the long middle section of the journey.
- Use an auto or cab for the final 1–3 km.
- Keep your hotel and dinner near the final stop of the day when possible.
- Add buffer time for traffic when using roads.
Delhi’s official tourism site also recommends the Metro as a convenient way to reach major destinations including Old Delhi, Connaught Place and Dilli Haat. See Delhi Tourism’s transport and trip-planning resources.
