Delhi Itinerary for 5 Days: Go Beyond the Highlights
Quick answer: Five days changes the question from ‘What can I fit in?’ to ‘What do I want to understand?’ You can still cover Delhi’s famous landmarks, but you have room for neighbourhoods, food, faith, markets and slow mornings.
Days 1–2 — Understand Old Delhi
Spend one day on food, lanes, Jama Masjid, markets and the Red Fort. On the second day, return to the historic core only if you loved it — but use the time differently. Explore a smaller market, a heritage corner, a spiritual site or a more focused food route.
The luxury of five days is that you do not have to “do Old Delhi once” and leave it behind.
Day 3 — Humayun’s Tomb, gardens and central Delhi
Start with Humayun’s Tomb, then use Lodhi Garden as your pause between major sights. Move towards central Delhi for India Gate and the wider New Delhi landscape. Finish around Connaught Place or another central neighbourhood.
Day 4 — Qutub, Mehrauli and South Delhi
Visit Qutub Minar in the morning and allow time for the historical remains around Mehrauli. Spend the afternoon in South Delhi, where a slower rhythm makes sense after several sightseeing-heavy days.
Day 5 — Leave the checklist behind
This is your best day for an experience built around your interests.
- Food: take a deeper Old Delhi food route.
- Spirituality: visit a gurdwara or temple with proper context and etiquette.
- Markets: choose one shopping district rather than trying to cross the city.
- Neighbourhood life: spend half a day walking, eating and sitting somewhere you would actually return to.
- Rest: do less. A good trip is not measured by your step count.
Why five days works so well
Delhi is sprawling. Five days gives you the freedom to wait out traffic, return to a favourite place, eat slowly and change plans when the weather or your energy changes. That flexibility is a major part of enjoying Delhi.
